Downtown Ventura – What To Eat

Main Street in Ventura’s downtown is a vibrant & lively street to walk down. There are plently of shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants to choose from. This is also a great place to check out the unique historic Spanish style architecture in the area. (Especially: San Buenaventura Mission and Ventura City Hall)

Here is a highlight of some great spots to grab food & drinks:

1. Anacapa Brewing Company

A gastropub with a selection of their handcrafted beers they brew in-house. Try the Benyhana Espresso Stout on for size, if you are into that. Also the Seaward Golden Ale paired nicely with the Asiago Cheese Dip appetizer. Very laid back atmosphere and a great spot for a date night or to hang out with friends. It’s situated in a 115 year old brick building which is pretty neato, and has artworks hanging on the walls by local artists.

2. Sushi Marina

Well, my name is Marina so it was only obvious that I had to go to Sushi Marina. This sleek sushi restaurant is located at Santa Clara Street (parallel with Main Street) & California Street. It’s a great little spot with a long sushi bar and a cute courtyard out front. It’s a narrow cozy restaurant so probably best to go during off peak hours to beat the crowd. The staff is very friendly & the sushi high quality.

3. Dargans Irish Pub & Restaurant

A great place on the corner of Main & Chestnut Street with lots of space inside. I love the decorations inside – gives it that old-Irish ambience. The food’s delicious, great service, and lots of beers to choose from of course. An added bonus: the incredible Century 10 Downtown movie theater is just next store. Dargans is a great place to get dinner and drinks and then go to the movies.

If you drive down E Main Street, heading in the direction towards the Pacific View Mall, you’ll hit one of my favorite restaurants in Ventura:

4. Mai’s Cafe

This place is an absolute delight. When we went, we were the only ones in the restaurant – we had the place to ourselves! The waitress was so lovely and down-to-earth. This place is definitely a hidden gem serving Hawaiian, Vietnamese, & Asian cuisine. I ordered the fabulous Veggie Pho for only $7. Such a great place, I can’t stress it enough.

It also has a rad mural on the side of the building:

Processed with Snapseed.

5. Caffrodite // Jim & Rob’s Fresh Grill

Right across the street from Mai’s Cafe is the double-whammy of the day. Caffrodite is such a cool hip joint! The barista was super chill and friendly. The coffee is pretty great – my friend ordered the Ambrosia: a breve with coconut oil and pure maple syrup. Yes please. They also have great baked goods as well. Right next to Caffrodite is Jim & Rob’s Fresh Grill. The outside is nothing spectacular, but don’t let that fool you. I got the wonderful veggie & egg breakfast burrito. Throw in some outside seating & it was one hell of a brunch!

Bonus! Some other great spots to check out:

  • Barrelhouse 101
  • Busy Bee Cafe
  • Masa Sushi Ventura
  • Natures Grill & Juice Bar
  • Blenders In The Grass
  • Rice Thai Cuisine
